Select Choir is audition only and maintains the highest level of choral performance.
Choir singers are required to:
be part of MS Chorus as well
follow music scores and/or read music
sing solos / maintain voice parts
have a higher level of choral experience / ability in choral music only
(Experience with popular music does not have ANY bearing/weight)
There are NO makeup dates for auditions even if someone is Absent from school.
Students must:
sing solo, no pair or group singing
have the Nat'l Anthem memorized, no lyric sheets
sing a cappella, no background music allowed
Audition process:
Auditions are 2x per year:
In September (for September - December),
In January (for January - May).
Students who are selected for the Fall season must still re-audition for the Spring season.
There is NO GUARANTEE students selected for the Fall season will be automatically selected for the Spring season.
Students will sing in front of a panel of teacher "judges" who have an extensive choral background
(i.e. have sung in a high school choir and/or at a college choir)
Teacher judges will also: make a certain amount of allowances for students being nervous, mistakes, and re-starts,
however, will still hold students to a higher standard for an "audition only" choir
Grading rubrics will be filled out for each student by each judge
Rubrics will be available for any student who auditions after the auditions are finished
Students accepted into Select Choir:
typically receive a 3 (out of 4) or higher,
sing well a cappella,
maintain harmonies (with little mistakes) while different vocal parts are singing,
maintain proper composure for public performance,
are present for every rehearsal,
and are present for every MS Chorus rehearsal as well,
are able to handle MS Chorus, MS Select Choir, AND MS schoolwork/homework responsibilities well
(this is extremely important as this Choir rehearses during ADVISORY ONLY
and takes away from any student study time during school hours:
students MUST MAINTAIN A PASSING GRADE IN ALL CLASSES)
Please understand this choir maintains 10-15 members, and while 8th grade students are NOT given seniority, this group usually is composed of 7th and 8th graders who have extensive choral experience and ability.
This does NOT mean 6th grade students are not accepted.
There are usually 1-2 6th grade capable students every season.
Letters of acceptance will be MAILED home and will NOT be posted in school per admin requirements
A copy of rubrics will be kept on file for 1 year pending parent questioning
Select Choir does NOT compete at Six Flags but does have additional performances
